I would like to have a podcast someday called Work in Progress Wednesday and broadcast it every week because I know I would never run out of material. AND I would bet that many of you would never run out of material to talk about in the comments either.
This Wednesday, I would like to talk about the one knitting project that I have on two pairs of needles. I would love to see any of your work you are presently knitting. I find it quite inspiring and troublesome at the same time because it just makes me want to cast on another project.
I have been working on a shawl/wrap since the mystery knit-a-long began in May of this year. It started on May 11th and ended five weeks later. I am proud that I will probably finish it within the same year I started it.
That week, for whatever reason, I thought it would be a great idea to be a joiner. I’ve never joined groups to do things with other people online because I just didn’t think I had the time or whatever lame reason I conjured up. So, now I join groups. And I like them.
This shawl is a project that includes a lot of things I never attempted before, knitting, and I thought it was a great learning opportunity. I learned alright. I learned that knitting with sock yarn is a special kind of horrible.
BUT then I began to love it. I got over the hate part of the relationship with sock weight yarn knitting and became addicted! I think I flew right by love and went straight to addiction. It turned into the project I worked on in the car, which these days is more time than I care to mention. The lesson, don’t quit because you think it sucks.
Another bit of learning came with twisted rib sections. Knitting into the back of the work, purling into the back…what? Well, it wasn’t as bad as it sounded and it looks awesome.
Although I was looking at all the women in the group using all the beautiful, hand dyed, hand painted yarns for their projects; I knew I couldn’t afford to have any of them. So, I’m making my shawl from some wool/nylon blend commercial yarn from Jo Ann’s and some 100% acrylic yarn from Michael’s. I figured I didn’t know what I would think of this kind of work anyway so I’d start cheap.
The pattern is great, the designer is a fantastic designer, and now, I have many more of her designs. Her name is Joji Locatelli, and the wrap is called Starting Point.
I would love to do this again in those expensive yarns one day. For now, I will be ecstatic just finishing this one on the cheap.
If any of you have a WIP or have done the Starting Point shawl, share a picture in the comments and tell me what you think. I love to see what everyone is doing. Hopefully, I will one day be able to post a Finished Object Friday with my completed shawl. Soon.
